Polished marble reflects light sharply, so an etched patch often looks lighter from one angle and dull from another. Honed marble already has a low sheen; etching may appear as a change in texture or tone. A scratch usually has a definite line. Coffee, tea, wine and food colour

These marks can combine pigment, sugar, tannin, acid and oil. Blotting and the baseline clean come first. If a darker coloured patch remains after the marble is fully dry, check the stone supplier’s stain chart or choose a ready-made natural-stone poultice whose label names both marble and the relevant organic stain.

Rust removers made for baths, toilets or general hard surfaces may be acidic and are not substitutes for a product labelled for natural stone. Yellowing has several possible causes: oil, wax, old coating, adhesive, persistent moisture, iron within the stone or a reaction left by an earlier treatment. Widespread change across tiles, a shower floor or an old installation needs diagnosis before bleaching or poulticing. The colour alone does not identify the cause.

A ring that fades as the stone dries points towards moisture, although a leak or failed joint may keep feeding it. Deal with the water source before treating the appearance. Loose tiles, movement, cracked grout, a musty void or recurring moisture needs building, plumbing or stone advice. Stronger cleaner does not address that cause.

Use a marble poultice as a controlled test

A poultice combines an absorbent medium with a liquid chosen for a known stain. It is placed over the affected pores and removed after the stated dwell and drying sequence. The product instructions govern thickness, coverage beyond the mark, whether it is covered, ventilation, removal and repeat limits.

Start only after the surface is clean and dry. Protect adjacent metal, timber, grout, resin repairs and sealant where the label requires it. Patch-test in an inconspicuous area. What not to use on marble stains

Vinegar, lemon juice, acidic limescale remover and many toilet or bathroom products can etch calcite-based stone. The vinegar exclusions apply even when the acid is diluted or followed by water. The reaction can happen before the product is wiped away.

Abrasive powder, a rough green scourer, magic eraser, metal scraper and powered polishing pad can alter sheen or leave scratches. Bicarbonate is alkaline and mildly abrasive; calling it natural does not make every paste suitable for polished, coated or dark marble.

Do not mix bleach, ammonia, acids, peroxide, alcohol or solvent products. A combination can release hazardous vapour, generate heat or create an unpredictable reaction on the stone and adjoining materials. Follow the label and the broader chemical handling rules.

Steam and very hot water are poor diagnostic tools. Heat can affect sealants, resin repairs, joints and underlying adhesive, and moisture can darken the stone long enough to hide the result. Flooding a floor or vanity also pushes liquid towards seams, upstands, tap holes and cabinetry.

Mechanical polishing powder, diamond pads and steel wool belong to a finish-restoration process. Their use depends on stone type, existing finish, flatness and the size of the affected area. A small dull spot can become a much larger mismatched patch when polished without the right equipment and experience.
