Why Own Cleaning is a Waste of Time

“Time is money” is an age-old adage. But it also works the other way around – “money is time”. So it makes sense to spend money to make time to make money. This idea makes perfect sense to a certain segment of the population – entrepreneurs. And if there’s one thing most entrepreneurs hate is wasting time on chores.

Cleaning is one of the most ubiquitous chores (and among the most hated ones). It takes literal hours to clean your home, even if you live in a small two-bedroom flat. Let alone a bigger home.

At the same time, you can’t simply ignore it. If you own your own business, you can see how that’s a problem. Being an entrepreneur is difficult enough without worrying about the minutiae of everyday life.

Outsourcing chores

This is where outsourcing comes in. If you’re still in the early stages of your journey and your business isn’t generating enough profit so you can afford to outsource your work to other people, that’s fine.

But there comes a point when doing everything yourself is detrimental to your business. When you decide to clean your own home, you’re not saving 40 quid. You’re wasting 2 hours that could’ve made you hundreds, even thousands.

When you reach that point, you need to ask yourself one question – how much your time is worth? And, if you have so little of it, do you enjoy what you’re doing right now? Now, if cleaning is something you enjoy doing, that’s fine. But I’m willing to wager it isn’t.

Focus on your work

Most entrepreneurs I know love to be in the trenches. They easily work 12 to 16-hour days while trying to lift their business off the ground. And they love every second of it.

It takes a special kind of person to be an entrepreneur. But the difference between successful and unsuccessful entrepreneurs is how they define “waste of time”.

To a successful entrepreneur, if a certain task is not moving them forward, it’s a waste of time. That’s why the moment they can afford it, they start to outsource.

Picking up the phone? Creating their schedule? Setting up meetings? They get an assistant. Cleaning? They hire a regular domestic cleaning service. Cooking? They pay someone to do it or order takeout.

“But isn’t that more expensive?” On the face of it – yes. But if spending a few hundred pounds a week allows you to make a few thousand by focusing on your work, which is actually more expensive?

Successful entrepreneurs work hard and play hard. There’s no time for chores in this equation.
